Basic Watercolor – Hours: 20
 

Student Goals:
Students will experiment with watercolor as a medium.

Purpose:
Watercolor gives the students an effective way to play with color in a very relaxed transparent style.

Student Objectives:

Provided with multiple lectures, examples, study guides, guided practices and student resources, the students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the art and design careers, by producing various portfolio based projects the demonstrate the skills and knowledge established by the Program Of Study, to a task completion rate of 80% or higher after 2 years in the program.


Tasks:

PA302 - Design basic geometric and organic forms showing texture and tone.
PA307 - Create value with the use of layering.
PA305 - Design from direct observation.

Watercolor painting is the process of painting with pigments that are mixed with water. Of all the painting processes, watercolor painting is known for its inherent delicacy and subtlety because watercolor art is all about thin washes and transparent color (though watercolors can be made opaque with the addition of Chinese white). Traditionally, watercolor artists work on paper, though the tooth of the surface can vary greatly. Oftentimes the white of the painting surface will gleam through and lend itself to the luminosity of the painting.

When artists first learn how to paint watercolor art, the fluidity of the medium is often a stumbling block because it makes the paint less predictable. Successful watercolor artists know how to balance control and freedom in their work, using watercolor painting techniques that create effects that often occur almost by accident rather than on purpose.

A watercolorist uses watercolor painting techniques like washes, working wet in wet and wet on dry, lifting out and masking out for highlights, and dozens of other techniques to achieve textural effects. But most of all, watercolor painting comes back to the premise that the watercolor lessons and methods matter-but what matters most to a watercolor artist is letting go and finding a balance between controlling and freeing this painting medium.

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are required as is the ability to read and analyze. Haring's work grew to iconic popularity from his exuberant spontaneous drawings in New York City subways – chalk outlines on blank black advertising-space backgrounds – depicting radiant babies, flying saucers, and deified dogs.[1] After public recognition he created larger scale works such as colorful murals, many of them commissioned.[1] His imagery has become a widely recognized visual language.[2] His later work often addressed political and societal themes – especially homosexuality and AIDS – through his own unique iconography

Experimental Project:
Project Name: Pen/Brush & Ink Tree/Flower

Project Overview: When drawn with knowledge, a great ink drawing carries a certain evocative power that stems from the cleanliness of the finished work. However, that same cleanliness can also leave you vulnerable because high contrast line drawings give you nowhere to hide. Every line communicates knowledge and power or timidity and uncertainty. It’s a fine line between one and the other, no pun intended. Here are some of my techniques for making ink drawing more approachable and less nerve-racking.
