Advanced Watercolor – Hours: 20
 

Student Goals:
Students will experiment with watercolor as a medium.

Purpose:
Watercolor gives the students an effective way to play with color in a very relaxed transparent style.

Student Objectives:

Provided with multiple lectures, examples, study guides, guided practices and student resources, the students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the art and design careers, by producing various portfolio based projects the demonstrate the skills and knowledge established by the Program Of Study, to a task completion rate of 80% or higher after 2 years in the program.


Tasks:

401 Apply the basic structure of color (hue, saturation, brightness) to generate color solutions.

402 Apply appropriate color schemes to generate design solutions.

403 Identify color models including additive and subtractive color.

Career Path: Graphic Designer

Watercolor painting is the process of painting with pigments that are mixed with water. Of all the painting processes, watercolor painting is known for its inherent delicacy and subtlety because watercolor art is all about thin washes and transparent color (though watercolors can be made opaque with the addition of Chinese white). Traditionally, watercolor artists work on paper, though the tooth of the surface can vary greatly. Oftentimes the white of the painting surface will gleam through and lend itself to the luminosity of the painting.

When artists first learn how to paint watercolor art, the fluidity of the medium is often a stumbling block because it makes the paint less predictable. Successful watercolor artists know how to balance control and freedom in their work, using watercolor painting techniques that create effects that often occur almost by accident rather than on purpose.

A watercolorist uses watercolor painting techniques like washes, working wet in wet and wet on dry, lifting out and masking out for highlights, and dozens of other techniques to achieve textural effects. But most of all, watercolor painting comes back to the premise that the watercolor lessons and methods matter-but what matters most to a watercolor artist is letting go and finding a balance between controlling and freeing this painting medium.

It is our assumption that students entering the program are here to lay a foundation for a career in a design field and will be required to meet rigorous and stringent standards. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are required as is the ability to read and analyze. Serious students will find that the program will provide them with an excellent opportunity to develop the skills necessary to succeed in the job market or advance in education.

HOMEWORK:

Year Three, Project Overview: 

The process of formulating the essay will encourage each student to reflect upon their experiences and growth as a studio art major and provide a means for them to think seriously and communicate effectively about their own artwork as they prepare for their exhibition. The essay will be used, in coordination with the exhibition of work, as a tool for evaluating the student’s capstone experience.

Experimental Project:
Project Name: Cut Paper Portrait

Project Overview: 

Paper collage is a technique of an art production where the artwork is created using an assemblage of different forms and shapes using paper. These forms and shapes eventually create a whole image. In this instructable, I'll show you how to make your own paper collage.

 

Specifications: Using the supplied materials create a monochromatic portrait of a friend or family member.
