What is Macro Photography?

Student Goals:
Students will be introduced to the concepts of SLR camera operations and the use of the composition in Photography

Purpose:
Basic photography skills are so important in today’s digital design world. Whether its a photo for a website or a product shot for an advertisement. Photography is a must-have skill in today's design world.

Student Objectives:
By June, the Visual Communications students, along with lectures, guided practices, multiple projects and various technique examples, the students will be able to set up and complete a studio photoshoot with little or no assistance, as documented in their portfolio.

Political Illustration

Project Overview:

Macro photography is a unique form of photography that involves photographing small objects to make them look life-sized or larger in the photo. The usual subjects include flowers and small insects, which we don’t normally get to see up close with the naked eye. This type of photography is also used for bringing out details in jewelry and other inanimate objects. It is a widely used art form that is incorporated in almost every niche of photography, whether for travel, portraiture, action, or even event photography, both in the film and digital age.

 

A true macro shot depends on the level of magnification. The ideal magnification is at 1:1, where a 1-inch object is also projected at 1-inch on the camera sensor. When projected at half life-size, the same 1-inch object would take up just a half inch of the sensor and would be at 1:2 magnification. However, true macro is anything that has been magnified at a ratio of 1:1 or higher.

Nowadays, both point-and-shoot cameras and DSLRs have a built-in macro mode that helps users capture significantly closer shots of an object from an observable distance. The camera automatically adjusts lens elements and moves them closer to the sensor to best suit close focusing, and without the need for extra lenses or macro tubes. Of course this cannot be considered true macro, because to achieve that you will need a dedicated macro lens (or an accessory that will enable your camera or lens to shoot macro).

Year Three, Project Overview: 

The process of formulating the essay will encourage each student to reflect upon their experiences and growth as a studio art major and provide a means for them to think seriously and communicate effectively about their own artwork as they prepare for their exhibition. The essay will be used, in coordination with the exhibition of work, as a tool for evaluating the student’s capstone experience.

Project Name: Political Illustration

Project Overview: 

Political cartoons deliver a punch. They take jabs at powerful politicians, reveal official hypocrisies and incompetence and can even help to change the course of history. But political cartoons are not just the stuff of the past. Cartoonists are commenting on the world’s current events all the time, and in the process, making people laugh and think. At their best, they challenge our perceptions and attitudes.

Analyzing political cartoons is a core skill in many social studies courses. After all, political cartoons often serve as important primary sources, showing different perspectives on an issue. And many art, history and journalism teachers take political cartoons one step further, encouraging students to make their own cartoons.

In this lesson, we provide three resources to assist teachers working with political cartoons:
