By June, the Visual Communications students, along with lectures, guided practices, multiple projects and various technique examples, the students will be able to develop a portfolio of their work that demonstrates their ability and for entrance into their secondary education choice upon completion of the program.

PORTFOLIO - Review Process


What school do you want to go to? Do you want a scholarship? Does your work represent "you" as a person? Is it diverse with content and medium choices? These are the questions you need to ask yourself when preparing for a portfolio review. The first thing you need to do is figure out where to go and what the requirements of the school are. Some schools require additional pieces to be made in order to apply or scholarships. Then once you have your school picked, it's time to put your portfolio together of your best work. Then, you need to get your mental game together... You're also selling yourself and not just your portfolio.

A portfolio in the range of 10-15 pieces is not so overwhelming in scale to hinder discussions; if the project or series is substantially larger, you can, of course bring more to show during the review session, but understand that to engage in a meaningful dialogue, less may be “more.” If you have two bodies (or more) of work, perhaps one that is completed, one or more on-going: consider bringing small selections of each, research the likely tastes and interests of the Reviewers, and consider asking which they’d prefer to see. Understand, however, it may be impossible, time-wise, to discuss all work with each reviewer.

Must-Have Pieces In Your portfolio:

The quality of your art portfolio has the single biggest impact on your application to art school. It's critical that your portfolio shows off work that best represents your technical skills and perspective.

Foundation Year (First-Year Students):

The Foundation year is intensive, exciting, and challenging, and through it each student begins to find and define a distinctive visual voice. At the end of the year, students are well prepared to enter the all-elective sophomore year.

Project Assignment:

For this assignment, you will want to do a very detailed drawing of an object close up. In the example, you will see the object shown from full view. What you want to do is crop the image in. The only way this project will work is if the object you are drawing goes outside of the drawing frame.

Digital & Graphic Design:

Formulate design concepts and presentation approaches for visual productions and media, such as print, broadcasting, video, and film. Direct workers engaged in artwork or layout design.

Macintosh Laptop

The client is Macintosh Computers and they are releasing a new computer/labtop...

 “The Archimedes 2100” New Laptop Computer

Background / Overview:
The “Archimedes 2100”  is Mac’s newest and fastest line of computers. This is the most high-end computer on the market today.

What is the objective, the purpose of the ad?
We are looking for three full page spread ads each one promoting a different aspect of the computer.

What do we want to say?
There is no better, more user-friendly, advanced computer on the market today

Target Market?
Ages 15 to 35 years old

Additional info & insights:
To this date, we have been slowly chipping away at the PC World and this is a computer that will put MAC on top.

What do we need from the creative team,  and when do we need it?
We need three ads that can then carry into a web design and a brochure.

Mural Painting for front office

Background / Overview:
The Doctors office has a space of 20 feet wide 10 feet high that they want to have an illustration of figures in motion but they do not want it to be any one sports specific. They just want it to be, figures in action positions that show speed
flexibility and activity.

What is the objective, the purpose of the Illustration?
Looking for original ideas for the wall after the final comp is approved they would like the artist to paint and sign the work.

What do we want to say?
Looking for a specific style that will fit the personality of the office, fun, energetic,and passionate about their work.

Target Market?
25 to 60 years old - athletes specifically

Additional info & insights:
This is a high-end office and needs to fit the interior of the space

Photography & Video:

Photograph people, landscapes, merchandise, or other subjects. May use lighting equipment to enhance a subject's appearance. May use editing software to produce finished images and prints. Includes commercial and industrial photographers, scientific photographers, and photojournalists.

Project Overview:
In this assignment, you will need to really do some planning on the objects you will photograph. You only have a week to get this photograph done. As with every assignment make sure you thin outside of the obvious solutions. Take a look around your life, what are some objects that stand out as interesting to the eye. Maybe it is some old tools or toys, what may be laying around?  The goal is to create a 3 - 5 print of your photos.

Design digital user interfaces or websites. Develop and test layouts, interfaces, functionality, and navigation menus to ensure compatibility and usability across browsers or devices.

Section 2: Global Warming


When we drive, fly or power our homes with air-polluting sources, we release gasses that heat our planet. The science is clear.


Burning fossil fuels does damage

Burning fossil fuels such as coal or petroleum sends carbon dioxide, methane and other heat-trapping “greenhouse gasses” into the atmosphere. Gradually, temperatures climb.


Think of it like a thermal blanket around the Earth.

Clearing forests worsen's warming

Chopping down vast swaths of forests, known as clear-cutting or deforestation, adds to the problem. Such drastic removal of trees is being driven by the agriculture, timber, and other industries.

We need the trees because they absorb carbon dioxide. Fewer trees mean more of the gas hangs in the atmosphere, trapping more heat.


The chief danger: carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide has caused most of the warming, science tells us. We can measure it.

For 800,000 years, natural amounts of carbon dioxide ranged from 180 to 300 parts per million (ppm).

Today’s levels are around 400 ppm – up 40 percent since the Industrial Revolution began in the mid-18th century

when the level was 280 ppm. We know this extra carbon dioxide comes mainly from burning coal and oil

because of the chemical composition of the gas.

Animation & Game Design:

Design core features of video games. Specify innovative game and role-play mechanics, story lines, and character biographies. Create and maintain design documentation. Guide and collaborate with production staff to produce games as designed.

Section Two: 2 Main Character Designs and One Landscape

Whatever game you decide to design there will need to be at least a few characters. It is your game design so what will they look like. Are the human like or are they cartoons. In the end, you will use these character design to build your live action play example screenshots and for the packaging design. So you may want to pose them in some kind of action concept.

Section 2: Male & Female Formal Wear
Fashion Design:

For evening wear, the corresponding code is black tie (sometimes called tuxedo in American English). The name "black tie" for this type of evening wear can be misleading because it is a generally accepted practice to substitute other colors for the traditional black tie. In formal evening dress, or white tie dress, this practice of substituting colors in ties is much less common since men's fashion tends to follow tradition more deeply as it becomes more formal.

The origins of evening semi-formal attire date back to the later 19th century when Edward, Prince of Wales (subsequently Edward VII), wanted a more comfortable dinner attire than the swallowtail coat.


In the spring of 1886, the Prince invited James Potter, a rich New Yorker, and his wife Cora to Sandringham House, the Prince's hunting estate in Norfolk. When Potter asked for the Prince's dinner dress code, the Prince sent him to his tailor, Henry Poole & Co., in London, where he was given a suit made to the Prince's specifications with the dinner jacket.

On returning to Tuxedo Park, New York, in 1886, Potter's dinner suit proved popular at the Tuxedo Park Club. Not long afterward, when a group of men from the club chose to wear such suits to a dinner at Delmonico's Restaurant in New York City, other diners were surprised. They were told that such clothing was popular at Tuxedo Park, so the particular cut then became known as the "tuxedo".

From its creation into the 1920s, this dinner jacket was considered appropriate dress for dining in one's home or club, while the tailcoat remained in place as appropriate for public appearance.
