Basic Drawing Tools – Hours: 20

 

Student Goals:
Students will draw the Figure

Purpose:
As children, we generally learn how to copy from photos, but as we make our way into college our subjects become more dimensional. Drawing a live figure in front of us is a much harder technique.

Student Objectives:
After completion of the lecture and the class exercises, the students will develop a final figure drawing that shows all the percentages of a greyscale, from 100% white to 100% black, with all of the shapes and lines built up by contrast to a finished drawing of portfolio level.

 

 Theory Task:

901- Prepare and present a portfolio.

906 - Participate in critiques of commercial art projects. 

 

Skill Task:

304 - Apply anatomy concepts in drawing.

306 - Produce illustrations using various media.

307 - Illustrate using value.

 

Exploratory Project:

Caricature Illustration 

Second Year Project:

Lecture - Gesture Drawing (20 - 30  minutes)
Even though gesture drawings tend to have a more sketch-like quality they still give an excellent opportunity for you to use one or two of these drawing in your portfolio.

Activity -  Complete 3- 4 different 45-minute drawings (4 to 6 hours)

Instructions: You can use your phone to find images to draw from.
1. The first pose will be done in pencil pick a softer lead pencil  4B - 6B
2.  The second drawing will be done marker or pen and ink
3.  Try using a thin brush and playing with color
4. Optional medium, try charcoal or pastels or chalk
    
The goal is to end up with 4 solid drawings
The drawings that you do, are to be quick - 30 - 45 minutes a piece the end result is to use your 4 of your best drawings and mount them for your portfolio

 

 

Lecture - Figure Drawing Final (20 - 30  minutes)
You will have an opportunity to complete a solid final figure 2 drawing
of 3 days of  different 2 hour poses each day.

Activity -  Complete 2 figure drawings for your portfolio out of the three days

Instructions:
1. First pose will be done in pencil
2.  Second drawing will be done marker or pen and ink
3.  Try using some different mediums - a thin brush playing with color?

Year Two, Project Overview:

Develop a drawing of a still life using objects in your room. The drawing should show an understanding of the style of this artist and the Post Impressionism movement.

Background / Overview:

This illustration can be done however you choose to do the artwork, but remember that you need to pick someone that everyone can recognize, pick an easily identifiable character.
