Students must be prepared to make a major commitment. It is our assumption that students entering the program are here to lay a foundation for a career in a design field and will be required to meet rigorous and stringent standards. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are required as is the ability to read and analyze. Serious students will find that the program will provide them with an excellent opportunity to develop the skills necessary to succeed in the job market or advance in education. _Most of the students graduating from the program _continue their education.

Project Overview:

Social Media Assignment

Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, These are all major media & marketing tools in our current era.

It’s fun! It keeps us connected! But it’s also a tool that can be used to ‘Network’ and present yourself as a Brand. Or for you to contribute to a related Brand or Company.

Objective:

Be able to identify one’s brand and representation.

Research and Identify References & Inspirations

Demonstrate and Express One’s Perspective through Photography

Identify 3-6 Inspirations

Now this is your freedom to EXPLORE Instagram (Social Networks). Who do you follow? Who’s posts do you love? Why? Is it visually stimulating? Express what it is you like. Now express what you don’t like about it, if you did it what would be different?

What Do You Like? Why?

What Do You Notice Visually? Is There a Consistency in Approach?

What Do You DIslike / What Would You Do Differently?

What types of images gain the most response? Why? What do you notice about it?

Using these answers, you can begin to identify your brand by establishing your approach and execution based on the research you’ve done and your creative stamp!

Take from your answers what you want to do for your Platform, now begin to identify how to relay that across 3-9 images! As an artist, what will you display? What do you want from your following?

If I’m an Artist, I want to sell my Art Thus I shall show my art!

If I am a singer, I want to sell my Music, Thus I share my music!

If I am working for Urban Outfitters, I want to sell the product, Thus I share my product

Is it that simple? NO! Because it’s Social Media, and not an e-commerce or iTunes checkout bin thus in order to sell yourself or your product, you have to deliver a BRAND, develop related imagery to support your product, yourself, or your company of choice.

Urban Outfitters sells urban clothing but instead of post only product shots, they post lifestyle photos like bloggers, still lives that are actual and familiar setups (desks, living rooms) In order to sell their product, they have to present it and garner a reaction, a want from those witnessing.

Year two, Project Overview:

- Artist, Wassily Kandinsky

One of the pioneers of abstract modern art, Wassily Kandinsky exploited the evocative interrelation between color and form to create an aesthetic experience that engaged the sight, sound, and emotions of the public. He believed that total abstraction offered the possibility for profound, transcendental expression and that copying from nature only interfered with this process.

Experimental Project:
Project Name: Soft Pastels

Project Overview:

Soft pastel sticks do become dusty or dirty when transporting, so carry a cloth to wipe them off before pastel drawing. It's generally easier to work on a toned surface rather than on pure white. You can buy toned paper, or tone it yourself using an acrylic or watercolour wash.

To prevent over blending and smudging when pastel drawing you can use a mist of fixative on that area. Beware: if the fixative is sprayed too heavily, it dramatically dulls and darkens the vibrancy. Do some quick trial runs spraying the fixative to experiment with the light mist approach.

With these foundations in place, let's get started with pastel drawing.

Specifications: Using the supplied materials create a monochromatic portrait of a friend or family member.
